The platinum-selling reggae band was formed in Birmingham, England, in late 1978 by singer-guitarist Ali Campbell and the rhythm section of drummer Jimmy Brown and bassist Earl Falconer. Their debut album, Signing Off, spent 71 weeks on the U.K. charts and eventually went platinum.

The group’s popularity in the U.S. was firmly established with the release of 1983’s Labour of Love, which peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard 200 album chart. The first of several all-covers releases from the band, it produced three Top-20 hits in “Please Don’t Make Me Cry” (Winston Groovy), “Many Rivers to Cross” (Jimmy Cliff) and “Cherry Oh Baby” (Eric Donaldson), plus the world-wide No. 1 smash, “Red Red Wine” (Neil Diamond).

In 1985, the band scored a Top-10 hit with a cover of Sonny & Cher’s “I Got You, Babe” featuring Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders. The release of 1989’s Labour of Love II produced the singles “The Way You Do the Things You Do” (the Temptations) and “Here I Am, Come and Take Me” (Al Green). The group returned to the top of the charts in 1993 with a cover of Elvis Presley’s “(I Can’t Help) Falling in Love With You” from the album Promises and Lies

In 2008, Duncan Campbell replaced his brother Ali as lead singer. The band’s current lineup also includes six founding members in Robin Campbell (guitar, vocals), Brian Travers (saxophone), Brown (drums), Falconer (bass) and Norman Hassan (percussion, trombone, vocals), plus longtime touring musicians Martin Meredith (saxophone, keyboards), Laurence Parry (trumpet, trombone, flugelhorn) and Tony Mullings (keyboards).
